about
Jolin Lee is a non-binary narrative filmmaker of Singaporean Chinese heritage, based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Jolin explores themes of family, community, and sociology through narrative analogies, camouflaging universal truths at the heart of each piece in equal parts wit, wonder, and warmth. Their work often leans into the genre spaces of speculative sci-fi, thriller, and magical realism.
Jolin’s debut short Ur Dead to Me, an elliptical narrative fiction, screened at numerous festival audiences across the globe in 2018 including the Academy Award qualifying Palm Springs Shortfest, won People's Choice in Indieflicks 2018, and the Audience Award in Sunday Shorts 2018.
In 2022, Jolin underwent the year-long DEGANZ Emerging Women Filmmakers mentorship program to develop a longform narrative project, as well as the Episode One Pilot development program through the Pan-Asian Screen Collective for a limited series.
Their third short film Chrysanthemum was made with the support of the New Zealand Film Commission and funded through the NZFC's Catalyst program, with production wrapping late 2023.
Jolin is also a creative and the current head of post production at Auckland advertising agency Motion Sickness.
